ULTRAM

Ultram is an analgesic drug that is taken in orally or even as intramuscular or intravenous injections and is used to relieve pain. Ultram can provide relief in cases of moderate to severe pain and in many post-surgical cases.

The main component of Ultram is Tramadol Hydrochoride that was initially developed by Grünenthal GmbH, a German based pharmaceutical company in the late 70s. This company manufactured this drug under the brand name of Tramal. The drug has now been licensed by the company to many other companies to allow them to market the product with their own names.

Ultram is manufactured by Biovail Corporation that is based in Canada and is distributed in the United States by PriCara, a branch of Ortho-McNeil Inc.

Indications for Use

The drug is used in the relief of moderate to severe pain and in cases where treatment is needed through the day. It is also indicated in patients who have had a surgery.

Dosage for Use

Ultram is not a controlled drug and can be obtained having a normal prescription. In many other countries, tramadol is available as an over-the-counter drug. The drug is available as three strengths starting from 100mg, 200mg and 300mg.

The initial starting dose in a patient who has never taken this drug earlier is 100mg and then increased until there is relief of symptoms. But, the dosage is not exceeded over 300mg in a day.

The drug absorption is not affected by food in the stomach. When taken orally, it should not be crushed before use. The drug is not recommended for use in people with a history of alcohol or drug abuse and in patients with severe hepatic impairment (liver problems).

The recommended dosage of the drug should not be changed or stopped all of a sudden. It should be done if necessary under the care and advice of the doctor. If this is done, it can lead to unnecessary complications.

The recommended dosage should be taken correctly. If any dose is missed, it should be taken immediately unless it is close to the scheduled time for the next dose. The drug should not be taken twice if a dose is missed to compensate for the missed dose.
